Taking Care of Your Pottery

Your Pottery

All of my pottery is fired at high temperatures to ensure durability. However, the items are still delicate in nature and will break with great impact or carelessness. Some of my works may be finer than more industrious wares. Please keep this in mind while using and cleaning them.

Handle with Care

Treat your handmade pottery with the same care you would offer any cherished possession. Avoid dropping or banging the item against hard surfaces, as it may result in chips, cracks, or breakage.

First Use

Wash all pottery items before use.

Hand washing is preferable

Hand wash your pottery with mild soap and warm water. Avoid abrasive scrubbers or harsh dish washing detergents, as they may damage the glaze and intricate details. Hand washing helps maintain the delicate nature of the piece and ensures its longevity.

Dishwasher Safe

Your pottery is dishwasher safe up between 30-50 degrees celcius (as tested by our dishwasher daily). Please take care of your mug while loading and unloading it in the dishwasher. Once again, do not use harsh or abrasive soaps or chemicals for cleaning. Some items with more complex shapes such as vases, are not suitable for the dishwasher.

Thermal Shock

Sudden shifts in temperature can lead to thermal shock, causing cracks or breakage. Never transfer a piece directly from the refrigerator to a hot oven or vice versa. Allow the pottery to reach room temperature before exposing it to extreme temperature changes.

Do not put in the Microwave

With thermal shock and the delicate nature of the pottery, your pottery is not suitable for microwave use.

Liquids and Staining

Some pottery items may be porous, making them susceptible to staining. Be cautious with liquids such as coffee or strongly colored substances. Wash promptly after use to prevent staining.

Mugs

With all of the mentioned above, take extra care when it comes to using your mug for the first time. After washing (bring to a steady room temperature), test the mug with boiling water before use. All mugs are tested before they are sold, however hairline cracks may have developed if the items were not handled with care in transit. Learn more about this in here.

Always take extra caution with hot substances inside your mug. Pottery is a natural conductor and will retain the heat from the hot beverages.
